Last year at the 2019 Western States Regional, now known as “Turf Wars”, dual meets for girls in the Greco-Roman style were introduced. Rightfully, the decision demanded attention — and received high praise from those in and around the wrestling community.
Even better? They were at it again this past weekend.
Team Washington led the charge with 17 athletes to pick up its second-straight title from the event. Second place belonged to Team Idaho, who fell to Washington in their dual by a mere three points, 33-30. All in all, over five dozen 14U girls suited up for the classical style at Turf Wars across a combined 15 dual meets, making this unique event the current standard for female age-group Greco in the US.

The schedule for next year’s Turf Wars is already up and will be held June 15-16. With just a little more push in advance, there could be even more participation than there has been for the first two years of girls’ Greco duals. But the bar is set. The question now becomes what other regional duals series will follow Turf Wars’ lead? Hopefully, they all do eventually.
