Our coverage of this past weekend’s Haparanda Cup in Sweden is not yet through. Silver medalist Joe Rau (87 kg, Chicago RTC) and bronze winner Daniel Miller (97 kg, Marines) will be providing insights similar to the format shared last week in effort to add some finishing touches on what exactly went down at the tournament. The Haparanda Cup streamed live on YouTube, but since it was such a busy weekend, many may still be in the dark as to what exactly transpired. And more importantly, how the athletes involved feel about it.
Haavisto Cup Caps ’18
The final individual Senior event of 2018 — just like last year and nearly every other year — is next weekend’s Haavisto Cup in Ilmajoki, Finland. For those who may recall, the US Seniors who competed at Haavisto in 2017 combined for six medals, three champs, and the team title, highlighted by G’Angelo Hancock‘s (Sunkist) stunning victory via fall over Oskar Marvik (NOR) in the heavyweight finals. That match represents Hancock’s last appearance at 130 kilograms. Ray Bunker (72 kg, Marines) and Miller are the only two returning Haavisto Cup medalists on the current tour.
A good number of the US athletes who will be lacing them up on Saturday have been overseas for over two weeks. Thus far it has been two events and two training camps with one more of each still to go.
As is the case with Haparanda, the Americans have enjoyed a solid semi-recent run of success at the Arvo Haavisto Cup. Most of the names below should be sufficiently recognizable.

Next up
This past weekend at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs saw what was called the Greco-Roman Leaders Summit. A collection of coaches and volunteers from around the country converged to discuss various issues surrounding the American program, including the procedures for upcoming Trials events, long-term athlete development, and fostering improved communication.
United States Greco-Roman National Team head coach Matt Lindland and Greco-Roman Operations Manager Gary Mayabb will both appear on the record later this week to share details pertaining to some of the topics broached, as well as provide their own takes on some of the material covered throughout the weekend’s series of meetings.
