As per the announcement on Saturday, Gary Mayabb laid out the full schedule for the new National Greco-Roman Workshop Series aimed at developmental-level athletes. Prior to the release of the calendar, three workshop clinics had already taken place with one more having been held on Saturday at the annual Illinois Developmental Camp run by highly-respected coach Bryan Medlin. 13 more stops are now available at various locations around the country, including Northern Michigan, Zac Dominguez’s MWC in Nebraska, Legends of Gold in South Dakota, and Curby 3-Style in New York, which is owned by former NMU competitor Joe Uccellini.

Several coaches and parents have inquired as to who is appearing where, referring to Mayabb and US National Team head coach Matt Lindland. While it technically does not matter if only because a) the National Greco-Roman Workshop Series abides by a uniform curriculum based around skill-building and high repetitions, and b) Mayabb is presiding over most of them anyway, we’re still providing that information below.

Illinois Camp Attracts Record Numbers

The 12th annual Illinois Greco-Roman Developmental Camp this past weekend really packed them in, which isn’t a huge surprise considering how enormous it is every year. But check out these numbers: over 200 young athletes converged on Washington High School both days to pick up techniques from familiar stars such as two-time World medalist Andy Bisek, multi-time Trials winner Joe Rau (87 kg, Minnesota Storm), WBC head coach/Junior National champ Jonathan Drendel, and of course, Medlin and Mayabb, as talked about above. In addition, a collection of athletes from NMU also helped out as clinicians.

By request, Medlin sent us a few photos so we could provide a full scope of just how successful this camp really was.

There is actually more to talk about involving Illinois and it’s having to do with a really cool and unique event coming up on Saturday. Titled “Greco-Palooza”, the event, run by Lake County Wrestling Club founder and popular Illinois youth coach Chris Haag, is not an all-day affair pigeon-holed by the typical tournament red tape everyone is accustomed to. Instead, the particulars are extremely simple and best of all, the action unfolds in the evening.

Greco-Palooza is slated to begin at 6:00pm and wrap up by 8:00pm. The competitive protocol is this: athletes pay $10 and can wrestle as much as they want within that two-hour timeframe. Sounds like an unbeatable deal.

Cost: $10

Dantzler Commits to Greco

Obviously, not that Dantzler. He’s been retired for a little while now, his commitment indeed fulfilled.

Tommy Dantzler (Front Range Twisters), son of 2008 Olympian/multi-time World Teamer TC, had a wide assortment of options at his fingertips when it came to the next step after high school. A star football player at Homewood-Flossmoor in Illinois, most figurered the electrifying tailback would wind up accepting one of several Division I offers aimed at keeping him on the gridiron. Those folks apparently underestimated Dantzler’s love for the family pastime.

Dantzler, who last month won the Junior 182-lbs weight class at Colorado’s Fargo qualifier (with all three wins coming via tech or pin in his round-robin bracket), has decided to aspire towards a full-time Greco-Roman career at the Olympic Training Center. He will also be enrolling at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in effort to continue his education, and that could be a great fit given UCCS’ obvious proximity to the OTC along with the potential flexibility a college schedule may offer.

But for as much of a “follow in the father’s footsteps” story this appears to be, there was no real push on TC’s part. That couldn’t be the case just because of how alike the tandem are. “I’m excited, and when he told me his decision I was like Yes!, but I didn’t want to show it,” TC recalled last night. “Because, He might be testing you, he’s slick like you. We knew it had to be his decision. I wish it would have been mine, but I’m glad he chose what he did. He’s only 17, but he’s a puppy with big paws.”

We’ll have more on Tommy Dantzler and his decision to pursue Greco-Roman on a full-time basis later in the week.
