Bisek Camp Coming Up This Week at Combat (WI)

It was originally supposed to take place in March. Then bam, everything got shut down, and all wrestling endeavors, competitive or otherwise, were put on hold. But now that the summer is in full-swing and wrestlers located in less-restricted areas around the country are beginning to practice (and even compete) again, a training opportunity featuring a two-time World medalist would seem to fit in quite nicely.

Beginning this Thursday at the Combat Wrestling Club in Blue River, Wisconsin, Northern Michigan University head coach Andy Bisek will headline a purposeful Greco-Roman camp that carries on through the weekend, wrapping up with a morning session on Sunday. Back in the winter when Combat founder Lucas Steldt first laid out the groundwork for this week’s camp, United States National Team head coach Matt Lindland was supposed to be on board. But due to restrictions in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lindland is currently unable to travel to Wisconsin.

Bisek — who earned back-to-back World bronze medals (2014-15) and ended his career at the Rio Olympics — is a highly sought-after clinician in all styles thanks in large part to his ability to simplify technique and reach common ground with athletes of differing experience levels. At the same time, those boasting a high degree of familiarity with Greco-Roman concepts stand to benefit from some of the more nuanced moves and motions he has to offer. In addition, two-time Cadet World Team coach Steldt will also provide instruction and assist with coordinating the curriculum.

The possibility exists for there to be Junior and U23 World Team Trials coming up as both age-groups are slated for World events later on in the fall. Should the US send delegations to these tournaments, the Bisek clinic this week in Wisconsin could be the best opportunity for area youths to participate in a meaningful joint training experience beforehand.

The four-day camp is going to be well-attended but several spots are still available for those interested. Below is a breakdown of the dates/times along with other pertinent information. For specific questions, parents can contact Lucas Steldt via email.
