Stanghill Comes Up Short for Bronze On Criteria

barrett stanghill, 85 kg, at the 31st annual Ljubomir Ivanovic-Gedza International

He was close. So close. But ultimately, Barrett Stanghill (Minnesota Storm) will have to wait another day to pick up his first Senior international medal.

Wrestling for third place at the 31st annual Ljubomir Ivanovic-Gedza International in Kragujevac, Serbia, Stanghill — who was up a weight at 85 kilos for the event — got going early against Nikolaj Dobrev (SRB), hustling in the tie-ups to earn a passivity point. The in-fighting was fierce throughout. Dobrev collided in following being dinged and appeared to try to increase the pace. Stanghill was a touch more fluid in this bout than he was in his quarterfinal loss that began the day. He was pivoting in on angles and showing different looks. Despite the activity, it wasn’t enough to avoid being called for passive himself, which he was midway through the first, giving Dobrev a 1-1 criteria lead.

The conclusive frame offered similar machinations as the first. The NMU grad fought hard for inside wrist control, wanting to laser in underhooks at the first available opportunity. Dobrev wouldn’t let him get that chance. In the latter stages of the bout, Stanghill snapped on a high front headlock and was walking Dobrev backwards. For a second, it appeared he might be able to turn out of the position and force the Serbian out of bounds for what would have (likely) been the match-clinching point. Alas, Dobrev scurried his way back in, closing that window of opportunity.

In his first match, Stanghill battled hard against 2016 U23 European Championships gold medalist and University World Champion Erik Svilvassy (HUN), losing on a two-point correct hold and a passivity point. Stanghill has committed to training in Minnesota with the Storm through the remainder of the summer, though as of now there is no word as to when he will be competing again.

Storm teammate and two-time US Greco-Roman Senior National Team member Hayden Zillmer (98 kg) is up next. He will be going for his second overseas medal of 2017 at the Ljubomir Ivanovic-Gedza International and will begin his day in the qualifying round versus Janko Ivetic of the host country Serbia.
