When the New Year arrives and the holiday season in the United States draws to a close, something else is going to open: 2020 January Camp at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Beginning on January 6 — which depending on certain customs, is still the holiday season as it’s either The Feast of the Epiphany, La Befana (for our Italian readership), or “Little Christmas” — US Greco-Roman Seniors will take part in a week-long training camp geared towards preparing for the all-important Olympic push. Able-bodied National Team members as well as a host of others are expected to attend, and as always, we will work to provide updates and perspectives as they become available.

United States Greco-Roman National coach Matt Lindland has provided the camp schedule.

Then It Starts Happening

Immediately after camp in Colorado Springs concludes, US athletes will be heading to Europe ahead of two tournaments and another training camp. There is some overlap for which to account.

Starting on Wednesday, January 15 is the Matteo Pellicone in Rome, Italy, the first United World Wrestling “Ranking Series” event of the season. It is a two-day long tournament, but not in the two-day format. On Wednesday (January 15), seven weight categories will run from qualification rounds all the way through to the finals; and on Thursday, the remaining three weights will do the same.

January 17 welcomes in Thor Masters 2020 (Nykobing Falster, Denmark), which will observe a two-day format (Nordic System). US wrestlers appearing at Matteo Pellicone are not entering Thor Masters — but a separate delegation of Americans are expected to do so. However, a majority of the athletes who compete in Italy will also be attending the Thor Masters camp that begins the following week.

Style Guide Changes

In the interest of transparency, we wanted to share the changes to the Five Point Move style guide that will take effect in 2020:

— Greco-Roman athletes ranked according to United World Wrestling will be designated with # and their numerical ranking (e.g., world #1).
— Numbers will no longer be spelled out when hyphenated (e.g., top-three becomes top-3).
— Athletes from Northern Michigan will be represented as NMU, with NMU appearing second if an athlete holds a sponsorship (e.g., NYAC/NMU). If a wrestler who trains at NMU has graduated , the school distinction will remain until the wrestler joins another training location.

If/when more changes (pertinent or otherwise) are decided upon, we will keep you posted.
