Young Joel Adams (55 kg, MWC) had a productive first appearance as a Cadet on Friday, earning silver at the Nicolae Grehov Tournament in Chisinau, Moldova. Cael Kahle (55 kg, Topper WC) nearly made the podium, but had to settle for 5th place after falling in the bronze round.
Adams won a string of matches to reach the final, and was mostly dominant. He was particularly impressive in the semis as he tossed his Moldovan opponent around en-route to a swift victory. US observers may be familiar with Adams due to his work last season. He was on the inaugural U15 World Team and later placed third at the World Combat Games.
Kahle might not have medaled, but his performance spoke volumes. In two of his bouts, he dug deep against highly-experienced foreigners. The points didn’t pile up, but the experience is starting to. Counting the current trip, Kahle has already competed several times internationally this season and will be someone to watch when the World Team Trials roll around at the end of next month.
Topper Wrestling Club head coach Bill Kahle was pleased with what he saw on Friday as the US group now looks ahead to dual competition tomorrow.
“The Greco was good and the referees called great matches,” said Kahle after the individual tournament concluded. “I liked that our guys fought hard, represented the US well, and hit big moves. In the later rounds though we were behind a bit with the hand-fighting and getting too extended. But I’m glad we were able to be tested like we were.”
Examples of Adams’ scoring prowess from earlier today can be viewed in the video below.
