Two age-level World Teams in Greco-Roman wrestling were determined today in an event that featured the best young talent the United States has to offer.
The 2025 U20 World Team Trials and U23 Nationals began at 10:00am ET from the Spire Academy in Geneva, Ohio and streamed live on FLOWrestling.
For the U20 age division, World Team selection was subject to a two-tier system. At the US Open in April, National champions in each of the ten weight categories received byes to the best-of-three final round with today’s brackets tasked with availing their opposition. Meanwhile — due to the selection procedures which have been in place for several years — the U23 portion of the tournament was both a National championship as well as a potential World roster selection process. Each of the U23 titlists from Friday are indeed considered National champs; but the selection procedures indicate that any Senior World or National Team member (i.e., top-3 at last month’s Senior World Team Trials) who is 23 years of age or younger receives an automatic berth on the U23 World Team. In ’25, eight athletes fall in this category. They are:
55 kg: Jayden Raney (NYAC) — Senior World Team
60 kg: Max Black (NYAC/NTS) — Senior World Team
63 kg: Kaden Ercanbrack (NMU/NTS) — National Team
67 kg: Otto Black (NYAC/NTS) — National Team
72 kg: Aliaksandr Kikiniou Jr. (NYAC) — National Team
82 kg: Beka Melelashvili (NYAC) — Senior World Team
87 kg: Payton Jacobson (NYAC/NTS) — Senior World Team
130 kg: Aden Attao (Beaver Dam RTC) — National Team
None of the eight wrestlers listed above were required to compete in the U23 Nationals in order to assure themselves of the opportunity to represent the US at that age division’s World Championships next autumn. However, one of them did — two-time U20 World bronze Attao, who blitzed through his bracket before sweeping Keith Miley (Arkansas RTC) in their 130 kg best-of-three finals series. If for any reason an automatic U23 World Team member does not or cannot compete in the U23 Worlds, then the National champ in that weight class will be awarded the spot.
The two athletes who did in fact earn their respective ways onto the U23 World Team on Friday were Aydin Rix-McElhinney (77 kg, Northern Colorado WC) and Max Ramberg (97 kg, Viking WC). Rix McElhinney defeated Ethan Barr (Golden Pride RTC) in two straight matches, whereas Ramberg likewise got past Jesse Perez (Life U Club Lucha Wrestling) without requiring a third contest.
