Mr. Payton Jacobson (87 kg, NYAC/NTS) has become the last man standing for Team USA in Croatia.
After a morning which saw two other Americans — ’12 Olympian/multi-time World Team member Ellis Coleman (63 kg, Army/WCAP) and ’19 Junior World bronze Alston Nutter (67 kg, Army/WCAP) — be eliminated from contention, Jacobson has the distinction of having become the only representative from his country who will take the mat on Sunday in the last repechage round of the tournament.
Earlier today, Jacobson decimated Karan Kamboj (IND) in the opening round before falling 5-1 to former Russian Aleksandr Komarov, who now represents Serbia. Komarov went on to defeat both Islam Yevloev (KAZ) and Milad Alirzaev (UWW/RUS), respectively, the latter of whom in the semifinals — which all adds up to Jacobson getting another crack at a medal beginning tomorrow.
Jacobson will greet So Sakabe (JPN) in his first bout on Sunday; if he downs Sakabe, he will then square off against Yevloev, with a win in that match putting him the bronze round opposite Alirzaev.
The schedule for Sunday is drastically different compared to the first three days of the World Championships. Action is set to resume at 4:30pm local time — which means that on the East Coast of the US, wrestling picks back up at 10:30am. FLOWrestling is carrying the live broadcast for the US audience.
