Khasay Hasanli (77 kg, AZE) finished what he had begun on Monday by coming away with his second title. At the end of the weight class spectrum, Mykhailo Vyshnyvetskyi (130 kg, UKR) likewise captured his second gold, with the only difference that his was earned in back-to-back fashion.
Day 2 of the 2024 U23 European Championships began at 10:30am local time from Baku, Azerbaijan and streamed live on United World Wrestling’s home platform.
Hasanli disposed of Yusksel Saricicek (TUR) in Tuesday’s final via technical superiority (10-1) to cap an impressive three-year run on the U23 level. In ’22, he had downed Davit Salogashvili (GEO) to earn his first U23 World crown before falling in last year’s final to Alexandrin Gutu (MDA). Hasanli defeated Gutu in yesterday’s semifinal to set up his meeting with Saricicek earlier today.
Vyshnyvetskyi himself now owns three top-tier golds after triumphing as a Junior in ’22 and at U23 last season in World events. He overwhelmed Hungarian Koppany Laszlo on Tuesday to emerge victorious by way of fall, thus adding a fresh continental trophy to his rapidly-filling cabinet.
Ziya Babashov (63 kg, AZE) was a runner-up in this tournament two years ago and has now upgraded his resume following a tight 3-0 decision over Vitalie Eriomenco (MDA). In the sport’s lightest weight division, Emre Mutlu (TUR) was attempting to become a two-time U23 European Championships gold medalist but was cut down by Giorgi Tokhadze (GEO) 9-0.
Mukubu Rebounds
Norway’s blitzing upper-weight Exauce Mukubu (87 kg) was edged by eventual champ Aues Gonibov (AIN) on Monday and made the most of his opportunity in the repechage this morning. Mukubu — a U23 World Champion in ’22 and a runner-up at the U23 Euros in ’23 — got past Greece’s Nikolaos Iosifidis to claim a spot in the bronze round. Once in position, he collected his second-straight technical fall of the day as he lit up Samet Yaldiran (TUR) 10-0.
Wrestling resumes on Tuesday (10:30am local time, 2:30am ET) with repechage rounds for 60, 67, 72, 82, and 97 kilograms. The finals and bronze rounds of these weight categories are scheduled to start at 6:00pm (10:00am ET).
