The contingent of USA athletes who are preparing to compete in the 2019 CISM World Military Games next week in Wuhan City, China departed last night for the Far East.
Four well-known wrestlers will represent the US in both Greco-Roman and freestyle. The hook here of course is that in all actuality, all eight service member athletes are, in fact, full-time Greco-Roman competitors.
Greco
60 kg: Ildar Hafizov (Army/WCAP)
67 kg: Ellis Coleman (Army/WCAP)
97 kg: Daniel Miller (Marines)
130 kg: Toby Erickson (Army/WCAP)
Legs
60 kg: Max Nowry (Army/WCAP)
67 kg: Jamel Johnson (Marines)
97 kg: Lucas Sheridan (Army/WCAP)
130 kg: Jacob Mitchell (Army/WCAP)
As most are aware, this is a strongly-credentialed group. Nowry, Hafizov, and Coleman each suited up for the 2019 Senior Worlds last month in Kazakhstan, with Nowry finishing fifth — the highest placing of any US Greco-Roman competitor. Six of the eight have also earned Senior National titles — Nowry, Hafizov, Coleman, Miller, Erickson, and Mitchell. Coleman leads the pack with five Senior “stop signs”.
Wrestling begins at the 2019 CISM Military World Games with freestyle on October 21. Greco action is slated to start two days later with 60 and 67 kg; the following day ushers in the conclusion of the tournament with the four remaining (Olympic) weights. Currently, it is unknown if a live stream will be availed to the public, and we’ll update once that information is confirmed.
Turkey’s Riza Wins ‘Major Award’
This past weekend, Riza Kayaalp (130 kg, TUR), who earned his fourth World title in Nur-Sultan to go along with five other medals, was named “Sportsman of the Year” by the Ankara Youth and Sports Provincial Directorate. Kayaalp had himself quite a showing last month. Not that he scored a bunch — then again, he didn’t have to, not with a combined score of 20-3 across five matches. Among his victims were ’17 World bronze Yasmani Acosta Fernandez (CHL, in the first round) and German Eduard Popp (in the semis). Kayaalp later decisioned two-time World bronze Oscar Pino Hinds (CUB) in the final. Coincidentally, the Turkish star celebrated his 30th birthday on October 10.
Germany’s U23 Worlds Roster
It’s not a vast collection of athletes, but Germany has declared its roster for the upcoming U23 World Championships.
67 kg: Witalis Lasovski
97 kg: Jan Zirn (2017 Junior World bronze)
130 kg: Franz Richter (2018 Junior World bronze, ’19 Granma Cup silver)
The 2019 U23 World Championships begin on Friday, November 1 from Budapest, Hungary and can be viewed live in the US on Trackwrestling.
USA vs. TSB Dual Confirmed
Last week saw the release of the roster for the impending US tour of Sweden. In that material, a prospective dual pitting USA athletes versus Team Skåne Brottning was mentioned. That dual is now confirmed for Wednesday, October 30. Lineups have yet to be announced (and likely won’t until match day).
