Listen to “5PM23: World Team Trials Challenge Tournament Preview” on Spreaker.

Episode 23 of The Five Point Move Podcast is as stripped down as it gets. No Dennis Hall, no athlete guests, or any other appearances to speak of. Instead, 5PM Senior Editor Tim Hands is on-site in Raleigh to overview this week’s 2019 US World Team Trials Challenge Tournament with a focus on several weight classes that hold a particular interest.

The premier news that has just been released helps crack open the episode, as WCAP star Jon Anderson (87 kg) announced he will be sitting out of the Trials for the second year in a row due to an assignment for the military. How this might affect 87 kilograms at the event is touched upon, but that’s just the beginning.

55, 60, 63, 77, 82, and 130 kilograms get their time in Episode 23, as well, with a spotlight on some of the sleepers. Is this the tournament where Jemone Carter (55 kg, Marines) comes of age? Then there is Corey Hope (NYAC) at 77, and how he is primed for a run now that he is competing in back-to-back domestic events for the first time in over three years.

But perhaps the biggest story (no pun) of the 2019 Challenge Tournament is the presence of 2016 Olympian Robby Smith (130 kg, NYAC/Chicago RTC), who many seem to feel is at his most vulnerable since jumping up to heavyweight following the London quad. Throw in ’17 Cadet World champ Cohlton Schultz (Sunkist) entering the fold, and this is one bracket that offers two built-in storylines fans will definitely want to follow.
