Thursday (tomorrow) welcomes in the start to Pan-American Championships training camp for the United States Greco-Roman Team. As per the report on Tuesday, there has been turbulence for the US with the Army removing their athletes from the roster. Three Army/WCAP wrestlers — Max Nowry (55 kg, world #9, 5PM #1), Dalton Roberts (60 kg, world #20, 5PM #1), and Alex Sancho (67 kg, world #17, 5PM #2) — won the 2022 Bill Farrell Memorial last week, which granted each the opportunity to compete in the Pan-Ams next month in Acalpulco, Mexico. Replacing the trio, in weight class order, are Brady Koontz (TMWC/Ohio RTC), Randon Miranda (Rise RTC), and Hayden Tuma (Suples).
Although they will be unable to suit up for the continental championships, Nowry, Roberts, and Sancho are nonetheless slated to participate in this latest five-day training camp. Miranda and Tuma are, naturally, also on board; Koontz cannot travel to Colorado Springs due to academic commitments. One other Pan-Am Team member will likewise not be in attendance this week, Rich Carlson (87 kg, Minnesota Storm, 5PM #3 at 82 kg), who won the Farrell on Friday thanks to a dramatic bodylock-to-pin against reigning World Teamer Alan Vera (NYAC, 5PM #2).
At press time, 43 athletes are expected for camp. The most populated weight range would be 67 to 77 kilograms. 67 lists six competitors while 72 and 77 boast eight apiece. Both 55 and 63 kilograms present only three wrestlers each, and Vera is currently the lone occupant at 87.
The number of wrestlers congruent to their respective weight categories is not an important matter for the US program during camp, however. Athletes routinely wind up with partners who are lighter or heavier. Rather, the key component for this camp, as well as several previous iterations, is the efficiency in which practices are run. Everything is timed in a specific manner so as to maximize performance and recovery. To that end, Day 3 of the camp (Saturday) is intended to provide an active rest period for attendees prior to picking up the intensity once again for the final two days of camp (Sunday and Monday).
