Adam Coon (130 kg, NYAC/Cliff Keen) was decisioned in the round-of-16 at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France by ’23 World Champion and #1 seed Amin Mirzazadeh of Iran.
Coon, 29, was called for passivity midway through the first period and Mirzazadeh used par terre top to score two from a gutwrench. Coon trailed 3-0 entering Period 2 and closed the gap slightly when Mirzazadeh himself was cited for passivity. From top par terre, ’18 World silver Coon tried to secure a workable lock but Mirzazadeh defended and the action was restarted. Coon attempted to pummel into potential tie-ups throughout the remainder as Mirzazadeh smartly attacked the wrists, and in one instance generated a pressure-release that caught the American off-balanced. There was no further scoring and now Mirzazadeh will next greet four-time Olympic gold medalist Mijain Lopez (CUB) in the quarterfinal.
Should Mirzazadeh advance past today’s semifinal round, Coon will be pulled back in for tomorrow’s repechage round where he would face Lopez.
