Listen to “5PM15: Spenser Mango and Joe Uccellini” on Spreaker.
Episode 15 of The Five Point Move Podcast arrives just ahead of the 2018 US Greco-Roman Nationals in Las Vegas with two special guests — Army/WCAP assistant coach Spenser Mango and Curby 3-Style Wrestling Club founder Joe Uccellini.
Mango, the now-retired two-time Olympian who presided over Greco-Roman’s lightest weight class for the majority of a decade, is certainly a familiar voice to our listeners. In what is his third appearance on the program, Mango and podcast co-host Dennis Hall talk about the relative importance of the country’s national tournament, how athletes prepare, and the new emphasis on “negative wrestling” that was handed down by United World Wrestling. As always, Mango’s sharp wit and easy-going demeanor play nicely opposite Hall’s more irascible perspectives regarding officiating’s influence on competition.
Uccellini wraps up the show with co-host and 5PM Senior Editor Tim Hands in a one-on-one interview. This portion of Episode 15 was recorded the evening before competition in Las Vegas began, and as such, Hall was on location to coach two-time Olympian Ben Provisor (87 kg, NYAC/NLWC) and unavailable. An alum of Northern Michigan University, Uccellini details the role he now plays as a coach on the age-group and Senior levels, and why the US Nationals should serve as a more aggressive marketing tool for Greco in the United States. Of course, other topics are broached, as well, including Uccellini’s presence in Vegas as both a Masters competitor and coach to returning former World Team member Jake Fisher (87 kg, Curby 3-Style).
