Book Randon Miranda (60 kg, Rise RTC, 5PM #4) a flight to another country and he will take care of the rest.
On Saturday, Miranda earned gold at the 2021 Ibrahim Moustafa Tournament in Sharm El-Shekh, Egypt on the strength of three victories (two of which were recorded via VSU). The event win caps what has been an impressive year internationally for Miranda. In May, the 24-year-old took second to Andres Montano Arroyo (ECU) at the Pan-Am Championships, and this past September captured his second-career silver from Denmark’s Thor Masters.
The Ibrahim Moustafa Tournament did not readily avail a live broadcast. Miranda triumphed over Meshal Aljayazani (KSA) 9-0 in the quarters, grabbed a second shutout tech at the expense of Mohamed Naser Eldesouky (EGY) in the semis, and decisioned ’17 Cadet World bronze Sergey Chigirev (RUS) 7-4 in the finals.
Miranda — who resides in California but periodically trains in Texas with the Rise RTC — has had himself an unusually busy autumn. Days after the World Team Team Trials in September, he flew to Denmark and competed in Thor Masters. Then, following his return to the States, Miranda spent several weeks in Kentucky before making his way out to Kuwait earlier this month.
Notes:
- Since the fall of ’17, Miranda has collected ten international medals (counting the Bill Farrell Memorial and Dave Schultz Memorial) with six golds and four silvers.
- Miranda was the lone American entrant at Ibrahim Moustafa. Originally, the US program had preliminary plans to send a delegation but uncertainty surrounding the event’s status resulted in holding back on travel altogether until the winter.
- The team race was won by home country Egypt (180 points) over Russia (125) and Serbia (120). Egypt entered 51 athletes; SRB had five, RUS had eight.
