USA vs. The WORLD: 9 (!) Americans in UWW’s Latest Top 20 Rankings

All of the Continental Championships have now been held and nine USA Greco-Roman athletes are officially included in United World Wrestling’s Top 20 Rankings.

As we pointed out two weeks ago, all of the Americans at the 2019 Pan Am Championships were expected to climb up the charts due to points earned relative to their results. But just as the Pan Ams wrapped, both the Oceania and Asian Championships were still undecided; therefore, it was hard to pin down exactly where US wrestlers might appear in their respective weight class’ rankings list and our numbers at the time were intended to serve as an approximation.

Turns out we were pretty accurate.

2018 World silver Adam Coon (Cliff Keen) is back at #2 in the 130-kilogram Greco-Roman world rankings, just as two-time US National champ G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg, Sunkist) has returned to the third spot. Coon won the Pan Ams, which brought with it 20 “Ranking Series” points, boosting his total up to 60. Hancock, who finished second, saw his tally climb from 30 to 48.

Kamal Bey (77 kg, Sunkist) began this season at #6 before dropping to seventh after the first two “Ranking Series” tournaments in February. But his silver at the Pan Ams doubled up his point total from 18 to 36, putting the popular three-time US Open winner at #5, just ahead of Bilan Nagliev (KAZ, world no. 6) and World/Olympic star Roman Vlasov (RUS, world no. 7).

Coon, Hancock, and Bey are the only three US athletes who enjoy spots in the top 10 but there are several whose point totals have them within striking distance.

Max Nowry‘s (Army/WCAP) gold in Argentina provided 18 points and the #12 spot at 55 kilograms while fellow Pan Ams champs RaVaughn Perkins (72 kg, NYAC) and Cheney Haight (82 kg, NYAC)  jumped to #12 and #14 in their weight classes, respectively. Pan Ams runner-ups Ryan Mango (63 kg, Army/WCAP, world no. 17) and Ellis Coleman (67 kg, Army/WCAP, world no. 14) were similarly rewarded, as well. It should be noted that neither of the five athletes mentioned above were ranked prior to the tournament.

There is only one American Greco wrestler who did not compete at the 2019 Pan Am Championships but holds a place in UWW’s top 20 — Travis Rice (63 kg, world no. 15), who took fifth at both the Grand Prix Zagreb Open and Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this year.

US Open champs Nowry, Coleman, and Hancock are expected to compete later this month at the Sassari City/Matteo Pellicone tournament in Italy, which is the second-to-last “Ranking Series” event of the season.

Elsewhere

When it comes to other major international programs, the US is right up there with everyone numbers-wise. Turkey has 11 athletes ranked in UWW’s top 20 with Russia right on their heels with 10 (as well as four athletes ranked #1) . Hungary is holding strong with eight; and Armenia and Iran both have seven wrestlers represented.
