The Greco-Roman portion of the 2017 Pan-American Championships gets underway this Friday in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil and there is some predictably tough competition the US will have to navigate through. The Pan-Ams are always a marquee event on the wrestling calendar, but with United World Wrestling using the results of all of the Continental Championships as seeding criteria for the 2017 World Championships, the stakes have been drummed up a bit. Here’s how UWW put it earlier last month:
“An athlete only receives points within the weight class they participated at the Olympic Games, World Championship and the Continental Championship. Seeding is also linked directly to the athlete, not the national federation. If the National Wrestling Federation replaces the concerned athlete, they will lose this position and the conventional drawing-of-lots shall be administered.”
The two other events of note UWW will be using for seeding criteria include the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2016 Non-Olympic Weight World Championships that were held in Budapest in November.
In other words, this event for the US Greco-Roman wrestlers, and everybody else who competes in both the Continental Championships and the Worlds, is vital. The United States is bringing four freshly-minted 2017 World Team members: Patrick Smith (71 kg, Minnesota Storm); Ben Provisor (85 kg, NYAC); G’Angelo Hancock (98 kg, NYAC); and Robby Smith (130 kg, NYAC). How those four perform in Brazil will potentially affect where they are placed at the World Championships. For the two 2016 Olympians on the roster, Provisor and Robby Smith, their results from the 2016 Olympics did not garner any points for them to carry over, as both placed 12th in Rio.
The 2017 Pan Ams begin Friday morning at 9:00am and can be viewed live via subscription on Trackwrestling.com.
