Saturday welcomes in the 2020 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships from Naval Base Kitsap in Washington. Trackwrestling.com will have the free broadcast beginning at 10:00am PT.

Thus far we have released one piece of preview material, an in-depth look at the gripping rivalry between two-time National champ Daniel Miller (97 kg, Marines) and ’19 Final X runner-up Lucas Sheridan (Army/WCAP). The Sheridan/Miller Armed Forces matchup has been discussed among some athletes and coaches ever since their National final. In other words, people have been looking forward to this particular showdown since December due to the venue. And if the team scoreboard is at all close heading into 97 kilograms, just…wow.

One more preview for Armed Forces will be making the rounds later in the week in an effort to highlight several additional key matchups between the All-Army and All-Marine Teams, as well as a glance at a few other athletes to keep an eye on.

Asian Championships

The Euros have been completed, and up next comes the Asian Championships this week from New Delhi, India (live coverage on Trackwrestling, subscription required). Due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus in their homeland, China will not be making the trip. A relative shame since they have several athletes, such as Liguo Cao (55 kg, world #9) and ’18 bronze Sailike Walihan (60 kg, world #12), who would have been seen as stout contenders.

United World Wrestling is expected to unveil the entry list imminently, and a lot of attention will be paid to the rosters for Iran and Uzbekistan (Japan’s roster was made public just over a week ago). Action begins tomorrow at 10:30am local time (+11 hours ET).

US Ranking Changes

The conclusion of the European Championships means one thing: the world Greco-Roman rankings have been amended. That is because, of course, the Euros, as is the case with all continental championships, is a “Ranking Series” tournament. Therefore, athletes who earned appropriately-titled “Ranking Series” points have usurped their contemporaries in the standings. Consequently, five US athletes have fallen out of the top-20 though three still remain.

Max Nowry (55 kg, Army/WCAP) was ranked #3 following his silver at the Matteo Pellicone Memorial but is now holding strong at #5. Ryan Mango (63 kg, Army/WCAP) occupied the #7 spot and has dipped to #13. Finally, G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg, Sunkist), who took third at Pellicone, falls from #13 to #17.

Five other Americans had enjoyed top-20 rankings last month and are now outside of the bubble. Two of the five — Joe Rau (87 kg, TMWC/Chicago RTC) and ’18 World silver Adam Coon (130 kg, NYAC/Cliff Keen) — will have the opportunity to garner more points next month (see section below). For Coon, it is his first time outside of United World Wrestling’s top-20 since the summer of ’18, prior to his run to the World final in Budapest.

USA Athletes Currently Ranked

Max Nowry (55 kg, Army/WCAP — #3; 30 pts
Ryan Mango (63 kg, Army/WCAP) — #13; 16 pts
G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg, Sunkist) — #17; 14 pts

It’s Almost Pan Ams Time

On Thursday of last week (February 13), six United States Seniors became one month out from attempting to qualify their respective weight categories at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Ottawa, Canada. All six weights start and finish on Friday, March 13. Athletes have to place in the top-2 to qualify. If it does not happen for Pan Am nations in Ottawa, the next and last chance occurs (for Greco) on May 2 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

One week before the Pan Am OG Qualifier is the Pan Am Championships (the roster can be viewed here). Just like the qualifying tournament, the Championships observes the single-day format. As of now, five of the six US athletes tasked with qualifying are also set to appear in the Championships in order to acquire “Ranking Series” points that may aid in a more favorable seeding position. A new Coach Lindland’s Report will become available later in the week further addressing preparation for Ottawa along with a few other topics of note.
