The first (reasonably) full edition of United World Wrestling’s new rankings have been released and two United States Greco-Roman athletes are listed. Kamal Bey (77 kg, Sunkist) enters in at #17 with 12 points and is tied with two other international competitors (2017 U23 World Champion Fatih Cengiz of Turkey and 2018 Takhti Cup bronze Aslan Boroomand Gharehdahgi of Iran). Bey’s 12 points are the result of his win at the Granma Cup last month. It’s a similar story for Dalton Roberts (60 kg, NYAC/OTS), who finds himself ranked for the first time in his career. Roberts (9 points) debuts at #20 thanks to his Granma Cup bronze. Incidentally, he is also the featured guest on the upcoming episode of the Five Point Move Podcast, which is scheduled to be released later in the week.

Williams Baptist’s Senior Launch

First it was supposed to be November’s Dave Schultz. And then when that fell through, the Midland Greco Exhibition Series served as a suitable stopgap. But with March now finally here, fans won’t have to wait too much longer for the Williams Baptist Greco-Roman team to make its actual, legitimate Senior-level debut.

By itself, the 2018 Bill Farrell Memorial/NYAC Open on March 30th is already working with more steam than usual if only because a dearth of competition nationwide has plenty of top athletes clamoring to get back on the mat prior to the Nationals. WBC’s presence at the event should suffice to add even more intrigue as the season’s crunch time pops up on the horizon.

In the next Williams Word (slated for tomorrow), Williams head coach Jonathan Drendel addresses the readiness of his athletes by pointing out that despite their inexperience, the NYAC tournament represents an introduction to a hyper-competitive lifestyle they should all grow to feel comfortable with.

“You don’t want your guys going into competition to be starstruck,” Drendel said. “It’s a big deal, it is a big deal going to a tournament like this. But at the same time, you want to normalize it, This is just what we do. Even if they’ve never done it before, this is just what we do. You’re not focusing on the little things — the flights, the hotels, the weigh-ins, this and that — you’re preparing them for that, but it’s about setting your eyes on wrestling and being on the mat. That is what we know, that’s what we understand. That’s what we do. You make this all about wrestling.”
