Two weeks ago, we rolled out the US Greco Roman rosters for the upcoming trip overseas in March. The list included all of the Juniors heading to Austria as well as all of the Seniors who are going to Denmark, Croatia, and Hungary. While there have yet to be any announced changes when it comes to the Seniors, quite a few age-group wrestlers have been added for Austria. In the original rosters breakdown (which has since been updated), a mere nine US Juniors were on-board. That number has now climbed to 22, with many of the athletes coming from the country’s vaunted Greco-Roman development program, Northern Michigan University.

In addition, a couple of notable high schoolers are also heading over for the Austrian trip, which includes the highly-competitive Austrian Open in Götzis on March 4th and a week-long training camp. There has been an increased emphasis on getting more of America’s younger Greco-Roman prospects involved with international training and competition. Opportunities to travel overseas, specifically for Cadet or first-year Junior wrestlers, are rare. School is in session typically until May or June and the summer months are often taken up by the litany of domestic age-group events, such as the duals and Fargo. So it is encouraging to see this level of participation during what is usually a busy time for high school athletes.

Austria offers just as much significance for many of Northern Michigan’s wrestlers. Much of the growing talent up in Marquette is comprised of fresh faces hungry to cram in as much foreign competition as possible. And with the Junior World Team Trials only a couple of months away, an appearance in the Austrian Open means the last chance to get some matches in before April hits. Several of the names on the roster (displayed below) are very familiar and include wrestlers who have begun to establish themselves as Seniors. Kamal Bey (74 kg, Sunkist), Randon Miranda (55 kg, NYAC-OTS), Jesse Porter (74 kg, NYAC-OTS), Mason Manville (74 kg, NYAC-OTS), and G’Angelo Hancock (96 kg, NYAC) are all expected to battle it out at the Austrian Open. Note: High school star and recent NMU signee Britton Holmes (CO) has also committed to the trip.
