Episode 42 of The Five Point Move Podcast: Thanksgiving 2020 with Hall

episode 42, thanksgiving 2020

Listen to “5PM42: A Dennis Hall Thanksgiving” on Spreaker.

It doesn’t happen often but The Five Point Move Podcast is back after having released the previous episode only one week ago. There was good reason for a quick turnaround: it’s Thanksgiving, after all.

One of co-host Dennis Hall’s favorite holidays coincides this year with a different twist. On Tuesday evening (November 24, just hours prior to this recording), two-time Olympian Ben Provisor (77 kg, NYAC/BVRTC, 5PM #3) defeated Fritz Schierl (TMWC/Ohio RTC) at Underground 1 hosted by the Wisconsin Regional Training Center. For those familiar with the lead-up, Hall served as a major tie-in for the match-up. He has been coaching Provisor for over two decades and the two are closely associated with one another around the sport. Similarly, Hall began coaching Schierl when the Ohio State wrestler was a youth — and still does. Moreover, there is the relationship Provisor has with the Schierl family as a whole, making the entire fair something truly unique for all involved.

After that bout is broken down accordingly, the conversation switches from wrestling to a few heavier, politically-charged topics normally avoided in this realm — including the ongoing election controversy, matters of faith, lockdowns, and masks. The key point that underscores all of these subjects at the moment is frustration, an emotion to which many across the country have become accustomed. 5PM is not a space for political commentary, and certainly will not turn into one going forward. All the same, perspectives should not be forced into silence if a society is to embrace their freedoms in totality. We need to stand together, despite perceived differences, and continually strive for common ground.

A few Highlights

Hall on why he didn’t coach Provisor or Schierl at Underground 1

“Whenever I have two guys wrestling each other I don’t coach. I just sit down, watch the match, and talk to each guy individually. I use it as a teaching tool instead of coaching against each other and pissing somebody off.”

Hall on why he has a positive outlook in the face of countrywide frustrations this holiday

“The thing is, it is Happy (Thanksgiving) because guys are wrestling again. I mean, think about other sports. Tonight, I watched two things, the Wisconsin Underground wrestling and then I watched the Penn State one, too. It was good to see guys get back on the mat. I don’t know if the guys got paid tonight. I’m assuming they got paid a little something. But it’s good for our sport, man.”
