2024 16U & Junior Greco-Roman National Results

Both the 16U and Junior age divisions provided an encouraging sign, potentially, for the future of American Greco-Roman at the 2024 Fargo Nationals.

The Greco-Roman portion of the annual spectacle began on Friday with finals and placing matches contested on Saturday. Multi-time champ Aaron Stewart of Illinois (16U, 165 lbs) shined en-route to garnering yet another title as he won by stoppage in five of his six bouts, including in the final at the expense of Lucas Boe (IN). Stewart is a severe talent and an enormous recruiting target for many top NCAA schools but is duly recognized as blue chip for the classical style, as well.

The weekend likewise belonged to a pair of full-time Greco-Roman athletes — Rhett Peak (JR, 60 kg) and ’23 U20 World Team member Landon Drury (JR, 63 kg). Peak (runner-up in ’23) has been a resident at the Olympic Training Center and impressed in limited action on the Senior level this past season. He was challenged throughout his journey to the Fargo final, but that was to be expected considering the dense nature of the field. Competing at 132 lbs (same as 60 kg), the prized prospect unfurled a crisp arm throw that proved the difference in his 4-0 decision over Treygen Morin (ID) to secure 1st place. As for now-two-time Fargo winner Drury — who next month will arrive on campus at Northern Michigan University — seven victories were required to come away with the “stop sign”. He was more than adequately-prepared, it would seem. Six of Drury’s seven wins were recorded via technical superiority. He had defeated Alex Braun (MN) in Saturday evening’s final, and Braun himself had a fantastic tournament.

Familial ties were a big part of Fargo in 2024.

The Junior final at 144 lbs pitted Pierson Manville (PA) against ’23 champ Wyatt Medlin (IL). Both had demonstrated outstanding technical know-how and tenacious attacks en-route to their showdown on Saturday, but it was Manville who emerged victorious 9-0. Pierson Manville is a younger brother of ’17 US World Team member Mason Manville. Medlin, of course, is the son of a man widely considered to be the best coach in the country, IRTC head Bryan Medlin.

Illinois also had Rocco and Bruno Cassioppi, whose older brother Anthony won several Fargo titles and later went on to become a star for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Rocco placed placed 2nd at 120 lbs whereas Bruno was the runner-up at 132. Both competed in the 16U division.

The wrestler who downed Rocco Cassioppi in the finals was Arseni Kikiniov (CA); in the Junior age group, Aliaksandr Kikiniov (165 lbs) also reigned supreme. Their father is ’09 World bronze/’24 Olympic Trials runner-up Aliaksandr Kikiniov (NYAC). At 157 lbs in the 16U division, the champ was Ivan Ivanov, who is the namesake of ’94 World silver (and former head coach of the United States Olympic Education Center at NMU as well as founder of Suples) Ivan (Radnev) Ivanov.
