2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon (130 kg, NYAC/Cliff Keen) was eliminated from medal contention earlier this morning as his vanquisher subsequently fell to the most decorated wrestler in modern history.

Day 1 of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games began at 3:00pm local time from Paris, France (9:00am ET) and streamed live on the Peacock Network.

Coon had drawn ’23 World champ Amin Mirzazadeh (IRI) in the round-of-16 and was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision. In the proceeding round, four-time Olympic gold medalist Mijain Lopez (CUB) defeated Mirzazadeh by the same margin, thus erasing the chance for Coon to re-enter the tournament in the repechage tomorrow.

As for 41-year-old Lopez, he will take on ’16 Olympic bronze Sabah Shariati of Azerbaijan in the semifinals later today. Two more victories separate the Cuban from a 5th Olympic title.

Day 2 Draws

The United States will send two more Greco-Roman athletes out onto the mat tomorrow morning — Kamal Bey (77 kg, Army/WCAP) and Joe Rau (97 kg, TMWC). As is the case with every wrestler in the tournament, across all three disciplines, both will start in the round-of-16.

Bey will greet reigning two-time World Champion and ’20 Olympic bronze Azkhol Makhmudov (KGZ), who is the #2 seed. Bey defeated Makhmudov 16-11 in the ’17 Junior World final but fell to him the next year for bronze in the same tournament.

Rau will square off against ’21 World champ/multi-time medalist Mohammadhadi Saravi of Iran. Rau faced Saravi this past June at the Polyak Imre Memorial “Ranking Series” tournament and was defeated via technical superiority. Prior to the sequence which ended the match, Rau had arm-dragged behind Saravi and was in position to score until his feet became entangled, resulting in an off-balance that, perhaps, changed the complexion of the contest.

Day 2 Greco-Roman Olympic Schedule

Unlike Day 1 (today), Day 2’s slate of action will begin early in the morning on the east coast of the United States. 11:00am is the scheduled start time (5:00am ET) and live streaming will once again be availed on the Peacock Network.
