The first week of the 2018 Senior Greco World Team’s “Base Training Camp” in Eagle Creek, Oregon is coming to a close. As you may have read, the curriculum offers parallels to last year’s opening World Team camp in the same location.
On the physical side of things, Olympic Training Center athlete/strength coach Morgan Flaharty (67 kg, NYAC) and SPIKE Core Program co-founder Joel Berens are helping put the participants through a series of drills and cross-training exercises. The other focus of the camp is, of course, team-building. Following workout sessions, the athletes along with US National Team head coach Matt Lindland and Army/WCAP assistant Spenser Mango enjoy the scenery and engage in various activities available throughout the picturesque landscape.
The quality of the video clips is not fantastic. However, they do provide a closer look at what some of the training entails and how it differentiates from the methods typically employed during a strength-and-conditioning phase. If you notice, the athletes are working on reinforcing their cores by operating from a more static Greco stance. The belief is that this will allow their bodies’ cells to constantly fire regardless of position or rate of distress.
Also included are several photos taken from around the campgrounds and the training house. Junior World Champion Kamal Bey (77 kg, Sunkist) can be spotted in a few; the same goes for heavyweight Adam Coon (Cliff Keen), Dalton Roberts (60 kg, NYAC/OTS), Patrick Martinez (87 kg, NYAC), and Ellis Coleman (67 kg, Army/WCAP). We aim to have more material coming your way next week, so please stay tuned.
