The role international competition plays for US Greco Roman wrestlers cannot be understated. Whether we’re talking about Juniors or Seniors, there is an inherent value in getting matches in against quality foreign opponents wherever and whenever available. It just so happens that in March, four marquee international events are scheduled, allowing for the opportunity many athletes look forward to in order to sharpen their skills.
Altogether, a group of 26 US Greco wrestlers are heading over to Europe in early March — eight Juniors and 18 Seniors. The Juniors will be pulling their straps up for the Austrian Open on March 4th, a challenging tournament featuring some of the toughest prospects from that side of the globe. Also on March 4th, US Seniors will be doing their best to navigate the Thor Masters Invitational in Denmark. A week later on March 11th, several of the Juniors will be joining (virtually) all of the Seniors in Croatia for the 2017 Grand Prix of Zagreb Open.
The final event on the schedule is the popular Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place March 24th and 25th. Wrestlers who are staying over will be participating in training camps either leading up to or following their respective events.
Notes:
- Two 2016 Olympians, Ben Provisor (NYAC) and Robby Smith (NYAC), make their returns to overseas competition following Rio. Provisor took third at the 2016 US Nationals in December while Smith had surgery in the fall and has been recovering. Thor Masters will be Smith’s first event back.
- Ildar Hafizov (Army/WCAP) will be competing at 59 kilograms despite earlier reports here indicating he was moving up to 66.
- 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont (60 kg, CWC) is on board for Austria, as are Cohlton Schultz (96 kg, Colorado) and Nick Boykin (120 kg, Tennessee).
- Patrick Martinez (80 kg, NYAC) and Kevin Radford (85 kg, Sunkist) are the only two wrestlers appearing in all three Senior-level tournaments.
- Nick Tarpley has been living and training in Croatia making the Zagreb Open essentially a “home” event for him.
