As reported in the latest Monday Roundup, a delegation of United States Greco-Roman athletes is heading to Sweden next week for the annual Sundsvall Open.
Ten Americans will be competing across two age divisions, U20 and U23. In past years, the US group consisted primarily of wrestlers who were, or are, under the tutelage of Combat WC founder Lucas Steldt. To be sure, Steldt is indeed bringing four of his charges to the 2025 running of Sundsvall (and all of whom are familiar to those who follow this sport) but they won’t be alone. Also taking the trip are seven prospects from Northern Michigan University’s National Training Site, including Gunnar Hamre (67) and Brennan Carey (97 kg). Hamre and Carey both got their starts in full-time Greco by training under Steldt, and last year Carey earned gold at this very tournament.
Combat WC
Three of the four entrants from Combat (located in Blue River, Wisconsin) are prior Sundsvall medalists.
Will Scherer, who is moving up to 77 kg, earned silver in’23. That same year, Aidan Squier (82 kg) thumped through his own bracket to come away with gold. And last winter, Ashton Miess (77 kg) wrestled brilliantly en-route to the final before falling via tight decision to Adam Strandner (SWE) and finished in 2nd place.
New to Sundsvall for Combat in ’25 is highly-touted Amryn Nutter (67 kg), the younger brother of NMU grads Aidan and ’22 Final X runner-up Alston Nutter (67 kg, Army/WCAP). Amryn Nutter — who along with Squier has himself committed to NMU — has already collected several overseas medals since pursuing Greco on a full-time basis and is likewise thought of as a potential top Senior competitor.
NMU
Northern Michigan is sending some of their most promising up-and-coming athletes to Sundsvall in addition to the well-traveled duo of Hamre and Carey.
Both Mike Higgins (82 kg) and Mason Parsons (87 kg) have overseas experience heading into this tour, and should be in position to contend for medals. The same could be said of Gabe Brown (60 kg) and Jayden Tadeo-Gosal (97 kg). Brown is only in the very early stages of his development but figures to progress in due order thanks to the allotment of lightweight talent in NMU’s room. This jaunt to Sundsvall might go a long way in that regard. Tadeo-Gosal thus far has brandished flashes of a very capable big man down the road and could open a lot of eyes in the spring at age-group World Trials.
The ’25 Sundsvall Open takes place January 25-26 in Sundsvall, Sweden. The full schedule and, if available, streaming information, will be released next week.
