Timothy Young (Army/WCAP) was on the verge of falling behind Arian Khosravy (CA) in Match 1 of their 97 kg finals series before Young pulled it out with just seconds on the clock.

The finals for Group B (82, 87, 97, & 130 kg) at the 2026 World Team Trials began at 10:00am local time (1:00pm ET) and streamed live on FLOWrestling. Rounds 2 and 3 of the finals series are scheduled to resume this evening at 6:00pm PT/9:00pm ET.

Young was trailing Khosravy — who was originally registered for this event at 87 kg but has put in a startling display so far up a weight — by a score of 3-2 when the latter converted a takedown with under a minute left on the clock. Khosravy then went to try for a gutwrench upon settling into position; when he did, Young stepped over the lock, caught Khosravy on his back, and held on for the fall with just :03 remaining. Young, who was a Final X runner-up to the late Alan Vera in ’23, now leads the series 1-0 heading into tonight.

One of the featured series of the entire tournament is taking place at 87 kilograms between recent U23 World medalists Payton Jacobson (NYAC/NTS), the top seed, and Beka Melelashvili (NYAC). Melelashvili took Match 1 in the morning session primarily due to his activity in the first period. Jacobson was put down first in par terre and Melelashvili was able to generate one turn from a gutwrench to jump ahead 3-0. Jacobson pushed, pummeled, and prodded Melelashvili in the second period and received a passivity/par terre chance but was unable to execute. Melelashvili seemed to be waning towards the bout’s conclusion, yet deflected any and all advances to grab the first bout of the series.

Bey & Schultz

Two of the program’s highest-profile competitors —  multi-time World Team members Kamal Bey (82 kg, Army/WCAP) and Cohlton Schultz (130 kg, Atreus WC) — were successful in their respective series openers. Bey was cited first for passivity against Fritz Schierl (NYAC/Minnesota Storm), yet he was the one with the offense. Schierl had attempted a reverse lift that Bey defended; Schierl kept his lock and proceeded to try and tilt Bey from that position. His grip became compromised as Bey felt for the escape hatch and covered Schierl. The signal for the fall arrived shortly thereafter.

Schultz and rival ’18 World silver Adam Coon (NYAC/Cliff Keen) were resuming pleasantries once again on Saturday. Schultz broke the ice upon the first passivity by torquing a front headlock for two points. Coon wanted a challenge, the call was upheld, and Schultz’s lead was 4-0. The second period saw Coon net the passivity point but come up short from PT top. However, with short time remaining, he found a takedown to make the score 4-3. The match was essentially over by then, but it had seemed as though Coon might have pocketed some momentum leading to tonight’s session for Rounds 2 and 3.

As mentioned, wrestling continues tonight with the last two rounds of each series. Action picks back up at 6:00pm local time/9:00pm ET and can be viewed live on FLOWrestling.
